Based on the stand-up comedy of Tim Allen, Home Improvement made its debut on ABC on September 17, 1991, and was one of the highest-rated sitcoms for almost the entire decade. It went to No. 2 in the ratings during the 1993–1994 season, the same year Allen had the No. 1 book (Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man) and film . In the documentary, they explained that the money would have been the only reason to stay for another season, which they both deemed artistically suspect. Though ultimately good friends, there was a tense relationship between Tim and Al. Al was portrayed as a slightly geeky character, usually having more knowledge, skill, and audience popularity than Tim. His catchphrase, as an opposition to Tim's ill-advised ideas or jokes, was "I don't think so, Tim." He also came up with many puns and giggles and snorts when a joke is made at Tim's expense. The cautious, insecure, brighter Al always bore the brunt of Tim's jokes and constant put-downs. Tim typically uses his television show to vent about numerous problems he is having in his personal life, and Al is usually very annoyed by this.
Carrie Patterson (Tudi Roche– the real-life wife of Richard Karn), Jill's sister, a world-traveling photographer. Marie talks about her struggles with her weight and about seeing a therapist. Marie is also encouraging when Jill says she's thinking about going back to school to get her master's degree.

The series was created by Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra, and David McFadzean. Despite not being a favorite with critics, it was one of the most watched sitcoms in the United States during the 1990s, winning many awards. The series launched Allen's acting career and was the start of the television career of Pamela Anderson, who was part of the recurring cast for the first two seasons.

Before the first pilot was shot, actor John Bedford Lloyd was in the running for one of two roles; that of Tim's Tool Time co-host (originally named "Glen") and the role of Wilson. Bedford Lloyd eventually got the part of Wilson, but his agent later made claims that the actor was unaware that most of his scenes would require his face to be partially hidden behind a fence.
The comedian's actor has not slowed down since the sitcom wrapped. As he voiced Buzz Lightyear in every Toy Story film, he led the Santa Clause film trilogy and starred in hit movies including Galaxy Quest, Christmas with the Kranks, Wild Hogs and Ralph Breaks the Internet. On the TV front, he returned to the sitcom world in 2017, leading and executive producing Last Man Standing. Allen was married to Laura Deibel from 1984 to 2003 and the pair share one daughter, Katherine, who was born in 1989. He married Jane Hajduk in 2006 and the duo welcomed their daughter, Elizabeth, in 2009.
He and his wife, Jill, raise three boys and they often rely on next door neighbor Wilson who provides unconventional wisdom and perspective. The syndication version of the episode "I Was a Teenage Taylor" [6.7] contains a scene previously unincluded in the primetime version in which Tim brings his Halloween guy to the Tool Time set. "I never felt—and it's come true—that this was done," Allen said at the time. "It never felt right. In the time off, we got real close where we talked to everybody." In the first episode of Tool Time, he was described as a "master plumber" by Tim Taylor. He also is very serious about his job, unlike Tim, who often jokes and messes up the project. Although Tim is the one who messes up most of the projects on Tool Time, Al is often the one who is blamed for the mishap, or is injured by the mishap. On rare occasions Al would cause a mishap of his own, but these were more due to overcalculating than Tim's attitude of "more power". Despite this, Tim and Al are good friends offstage, and Al often helps out, either by helping with home projects, or by watching his children. In the show's eighth and final season, the middle child Randy left for an environmental study program in Costa Rica in the episode "Adios", which aired on September 29, 1998.
There has always been some disparity between how many brothers Tim has. On several occasions in the later seasons, it is mentioned that Tim has four brothers, but in earlier seasons he is stated to have five. Marty and Jeff made appearances, and Steve was mentioned in multiple seasons. Tim is occasionally chauvinistic in attitude, usually putting women down or sometimes seeing them as inferior .
In the Eighth Season of the show, Randy leaves for Costa Rica , reappearing in only one episode when he came back for Christmas. On that occasion, Randy felt that so much had changed in his absence that he no longer fit in with the family, although confiding in Wilson aided his feelings. Bradley Michael "Brad" Taylor – is the oldest, most athletic, and strongest of the three boys, once seen throwing Randy around when they got into an argument. While all three boys are portrayed as troublemakers at one point or another, Brad gets into the most serious trouble. He had a run-in with the police after throwing bricks at windows in an abandoned greenhouse, and was once discovered in possession of marijuana, which he admitted to smoking.

The audience finally sees Earl Hindman's full face unobscured in the series finale's curtain call. At first it was unclear whether "Wilson" was his first name or last, but his full name is revealed as Wilson Wilson Wilson, Jr. In Season 6, it is revealed that his cousins are the Wilsons of The Beach Boys. He has a grown niece named Willow Wilson , who appeared regularly in the seventh season when she moved in with him for a while. His usual greetings are "Well, hi-dee-ho ..." or "Hi ho, there neighbor" or "good neighbor" when greeting Tim, "neighborette" when greeting Jill, and "Taylor lad" when greeting the Taylor boys.
While Mark never truly bonded with Randy, in the final season Mark and Brad grew very close as the result of the dynamic of their relationship changing when Randy left for Costa Rica. Mark eventually became taller than Randy in the seventh season. A close second is Jill, who only missed the second part of the series finale . Tim always thinks things need "more power" and is often seen wearing sweaters from Michigan-based colleges. He is also very connected to his tools, even once joking that when he dies he would like to be buried with them. Premiering in June 2022, Tim Allen and Richard Karn, teamed up with YouTuber DIYer April Wilkerson, on History Channel documentary series More Power; where the hosts cover the history of tools, again a la Tool Time from Home Improvement.
